Main
The NUS MFE program has one intake per year, with candidates joining in August every year. This program is offered as a full-time program, a part-time program as well as a distance learning program.
Duration of the Program
The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are 18 months and 4 years for the part time and distance learning students. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are 1 year and 2 years for full time students.
Semesters
The program operates on the 2 regular university semesters, specifically, Semester 1 and 2 from August-December, and January-April, and also on the Special Term from May-July. The financial Engineering project may be taken in any semester or term. Please refer to the Academic Calender for more details.
Classes
All courses meet ten times. There are also supplementary computer lab exercises and tutorials for each course. Lectures are mostly held in the evenings from 7.00pm to 10.00pm and on Saturdays. Each lecture lasts 3 hours.
Leave of Absence
Leave of Absence may be granted to a candidate for up to 1 year only. A candidate who has to leave the program for longer than that will need to withdraw from the program. The Leave of Absence will be excluded from the count against student’s maximum candidature.
Termination of Candidature
The candidature may be terminated if a candidate fails twice in the examination of a course, or fails in three or more courses throughout the course of study. No extension of the maximum period of candidature will be permitted. A candidate should also attain a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 to remain in good academic standing.
On Campus
Part-Time Program
For the first ten years of its existence, the MFE program at NUS has been offered as a part-time program. It has been catered to those that are employed full-time; classes are in the evenings 7-10pm on weekdays or on Saturdays mornings or afternoon. In addition, the online videos of the lectures can be requested by those whose work schedules do not allow them to attend their on-campus lectures on a regular basis, or whose work travel schedules keep them away from Singapore for a significant number of their lectures, subject to approval.
There is no disruption to one's career when taking the MFE part-time.
The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for the part-time program are 18 months and 4 years respectively.
Full-Time Program
Since 2009, there is a full-time option available. With lectures mostly conducted during weekday evenings and Saturdays, during the day, full-time students will be free to pursue internships (part-time work) if they wish. RMI will have limited number of spots available for such students.
Enrollment in the full-time mode enables overseas students to obtain Student's Passes to stay in Singapore.
Enrolling in the full-time program without full-time work obligations will allow the students to more easily finish the program in less than two years. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for the full-time program are 1 year and 2 years, respectively.
Distance Learning
Why Distance Learning
- You will study the same syllabus, use the same materials, be assessed by the same examinations and graduate with the same degree as that of a student who studies on-campus.
- Flexible study - at home, in the office, while travelling, without needing to attend lectures at fixed times.
- There is no disruption to your career.
Distance Mode and Methods of Delivery
The distance learning students will follow the same program of study as in the on-campus mode. They will use the same learning materials and will be required to complete the same assignment and assessment tasks. For the MFE program, distance learning students can take part in the class through video recordings. All students who are under the distance learning track are required to attend the first semester in-person in Singapore.
Canvas
This specially designed learning management system (LMS) provides full support for teaching and learning over the Internet. With the Canvas system we can facilitate the organization of course materials, administer assignments and online quizzes, implement bulletin boards and chat rooms, and provide other features in a secure web environment with full participant authentication. All student and instructor interfaces can be accessed using any web browser on any Internet-connected computer.
Examination Procedures
All examination guidelines and procedures follow that of the university. Distance learning students are required to sit for the supervised examinations at the nearest nominated location where applicable. They are also welcome to sit for the exam in Singapore with the other students.
