In October 2018, RMI conducted a customized Training Program on Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI), for the first time, for a group of Chinese delegates. Led by Guangzhou-based Huangpu Blockchain Training Centre, 14 participants consisting of senior managers, CEOs, and investors from China attended the course over three days.

The morning session on day one featured an introduction to blockchain and its applications, blockchain testnets such as Smart Harmony and Ethereum, the next generation internet, and the possible long-term changes of the blockchain and digital revolution. The afternoon section focused on development of Singapore’s regulation of the financial technology industry and the role played by the government in technological innovation.

On day two the agenda focused on blockchain, bitcoin, big data, machine learning and robotics. The morning session went in depth on the destructive innovation brought about by bit goods and blockchain, blockchain being the hottest new financial technology and the successful applications of bitcoin. The afternoon session on day two further focused on the regulations in Singapore and the role of government in light of the morning discussions.

The third and final day of the training program focused on the financial innovations and risks to the banks during the first half of the day. The discussion was centred on the relationship between innovation and risk and the lessons learned from the financial crisis. The second half of the day focused heavily on robotics, especially the role of a robotic financial advisor in the financial services industry and if it will replace a personal financial agent in the future.

RMI has engaged two senior industry practitioners to teach the highly practical course. The faculty included NUS MFE alumnus Dr. Pei Sai Fan, currently Associate Professor of Quantitative Finance (Practice) at the Singapore Management University (SMU) with more than 30 years of banking and financial supervision experience, and Dr. Yimin Yang, Senior Director at Accenture, a management consulting and technology services company.
