RMI Research Seminars
27 October & 9 November 2015

On 27 October 2015, Dr. Neale O¡¯Connor, Visiting Associate Professor at NUS Business School, gave a research seminar at RMI on ¡°Evidence Regarding the Internal Controls of Chinese U.S.-Listed Firms.¡± His research studies the internal controls underlying the purportedly weaker financial reporting of Chinese U.S.-listed firms. The results of his research suggest that the Chinese U.S.-listed firms, by IPOs and reverse mergers, report significantly more ineffective internal controls (IICs) than their U.S. counterparts. This study is one of the first to examine the distinctions in IIC incidents, under-reporting, reporting responses to scrutiny, and IIC types and auditors of the Chinese U.S.-listed firms.

A second research seminar was organized by RMI in the same quarter featuring Prof. Konstantinides Dimitrios, a professor at the Department of Mathematics at University of Aegean. The talk was titled, ¡°Asymptotics for Ruin Probabilities in a Discrete-Time Risk Model with Dependent Financial and Insurance Risks.¡± The research discussed in the seminar considers some non-standard renewal risk models with some dependent claim sizes and stochastic return, where an insurance company is allowed to invest its wealth in financial assets, and the price process of the investment portfolio is described as a geometric L¨¦vy process.

The information session came to a close with a lively and interactive Q&A session with the audience.
